fun with virtualization... hopefully (part two), virtual, virtualization
At the end of my last post, I was in the midst of installing Windows Server 2008 as a virtual machine. I was successful.
After getting my first ever virtual machine installed, I decided to go for seconds. If I can virtualize one server, why not virtualize two, right?
To do so:
1. Using vSphere, I went into Inventory, File, New, Virtual Machine, and created my second virtual machine... which is also going to be a Windows 2008 Server.
2. To get the Windows install to begin, I had to connect to the host CD/DVD drive, which is a button on the console.
3. Minutes later, Windows 2008 Server is installed and is up and running... and again, I'm surprised... this has gone too smooth... So what now? I guess I'm going to start using these servers. I'm also looking what I need to do to maintain, backup, and manage these virtualizations.
4. Concerning managing, there are several things to tweak in vSphere. In particular, click on Inventory, Configuration. Here, you can tweak with the hardware and software. For example, under Software, Virtual Machine Startup/Shutdown, you can choose what machines you want to startup or shutdown manually and automatically, in what order, and by how much delay.
